1. Discuss the qualities of wood that are related to wood carving and give the reasons why you chose the wood used in Requirements 4 and 5.
2. Do the following:
(a) Describe five wood-carving tools and their use.
(b) Describe several types of sharpening stones and tell how they are used.
(c) Show how to sharpen a pocketknife and other tools used in wood carving using a sharpening stone and a "slipstick" sharpener that you have made.
3. Demonstrate the safety principles for using a pocketknife and special wood-carving tools.
4. Plan and carve in the round a simple object such as a neckerchief slide, a totem, an animal figure, a Kachina doll, or a letter opener. Prepare the object for stain, paint, or other finish.
5. Plan and carve in low relief a design on some simple object such as a plaque, bookends, tray, chest, or box. Prepare for stain, paint, or other finish.
